A relative of ginger, turmeric is a perennial plant that grows 5 to 6 feet high in the tropical regions, with trumpet-shaped, dull yellow flowers. Its roots are bulbs that also produce rhizomes, which then produce stems and roots for new plants. It contains at least two chemicals, curcumin and curcuminoids, that act to decrease inflammation as well as the yellow pigment that gives many curry dishes a golden color.
